Oh no no no no.

Let’s look at what happened here.

“Hey. She’s a villain! And she’s greedy! And an overbearing mother! And a brunette! She must be… JEWISH!”

This is not uncovering antisemitism in the film. This is uncovering antisemitism in the viewer.

dude I’m jewish and I made this post because the way common medieval antisemitic tropes were tied to this character made me feel personally uncomfortable…

but it is pretty shitty to accuse me of being ~antisemitic~ if you do not!!!!!

I am saying that this is a result of internalized antisemitism. That is not the same as calling you (or anyone) antisemitic. But if you see the confluence of dark hair + pushy mother + villain and get the result “Jew,” well, that’s exactly how internalized antisemitism works.

Because here’s the thing. Pushy mothers? Sort of universal. Particularly in fairy tales. And the dark hair? That’s not a medieval antisemitic trope - the medieval antisemitic trope portrayed Jews are red headed. And the trope about greed is pretty much only about money, and Goethel’s selfishness here is all about health and beauty, which has no relation to any Jewish stereotypes.

You feel what you feel, but it’s worth taking a closer look at why.

Show me a copy of that ad. Because if you look at that quote in context, it says “Google told me that…” and if you google the phrase, all you come up with are variations on this same blog post.

I am not calling you emotional or silly. I am, however, saying that you are claiming that certain things are part of a historical trope of antisemitism that simply aren’t.

I am not saying you don’t understand how you feel about your identity. I am saying that you aren’t aware of why you feel that way. Antisemitism exists! It exists in art! In fact, it is so pervasive in art that we are trained to read Jewishness onto villains even when that is neither the intent nor content of those pieces of art. That is how internalized antisemitism (or any other kind of internalized oppression) works, which is what makes it insidious.
