It’s funny that Donald posted so much about Show Boat this weekend… I’ve been having a Show Boat week as well, centered mostly around this recording of the 1971 London production, most notable for featuring Cleo Laine as Julie.
There’s a lot to like about this production, in particular the cast. There’s a bit that makes me wonder, such as assigning “Nobody Else But Me” to Julie so she has something to do in between the miscegenation scene and “Bill” in Act II. And then there are the orchestrations by Keith Amos, which are often just fine but occasionally, as they do in this track, wander into Burt Bacharach territory.
What can I say. It’s summer, the sun is out…and miscegenation is in the air
This is such an unusual cast recording. It’s entertaining to listen to, and unlike any other ‘Show Boat’ you’ll ever see...
