The death of Marvin Hamlisch sparked a memory of Bernstein & Markell’s response song, “Something,” which retold the story of “Nothing” from the perspective of Mr. Karp. That song appeared in the revue Upstairs at O’Neals. I don’t yet have the cast recording, but it’s en route from Amazon.
In 1996, Bruce Kimmel put out a great, although in retrospect, mistitled album called Broadway Bound featuring songs from up-and-coming musical theater writers. Among the best songs featured was this one, “Ninas,” by Doug Bernstein and Denis Markell, performed here by Jonathan “Jafar” Freeman and Christopher “Beyond Therapy” Durang.
And for the love of all things holy, please tell me that even those of you coming of age in the era of Squigs still know what this song is about.
This is delightful. Truly.
