I was just talking with Jo about star quality and the “it” factor on Broadway, saying that the only two actresses of the current generation I am sure have real star quality are Audra McDonald and Kristin Chenoweth. I’ve been lucky to see Audra in many different settings, from Broadway to concert halls to seminars, and she’s always just radiated star quality, no matter the role.
I’ve never seen Kristin on stage, but I was in the studio when she recorded her tracks for this album. Besides being simply one of the nicest human beings on the planet, she nailed these songs and brought a character to life despite the sterility of the studio and the oddity of the situation (recording a studio cast album of a show I’m not sure she had ever done, on a different day than the orchestra and her costars recorded). And she did it in fewer takes than pretty much anyone else I ever saw record.
