Don’t let anyone tell you that EW doesn’t love The Broadway.

Overture” from Annie (2012 Broadway Revival)

music Charles Strouse (lyrics Martin Charnin)

Even though this “Overture” is interrupted in the production currently playing the Palace, the powers that be wisely (and deceptively?) include in in total in the new cast recording (currently only available AT the theater and from the production’s website).  The new orchestrations really are delightful and the recording—produced by Thomas Z Shepard—is better than the production itself.

I’ve been scouring Tumblr for the last two days for tracks from this album. I shouldn’t be surprised that Donald was the one who finally came through.

(But, um, I have feelings about these orchestrations.)

Maybe the best “dancing servants” scene of our, or any age. This was where I started to wear through my VHS tape. Now, of course, I am thirty years old and can just hit the back arrow grandly while sipping a cocktail. “When you wake, ring for Drake / Drake will bring your tray!” “When you’re through, Mrs. Pugh / Comes to take / It away!” Hell, yeah. It’s all about the money, money… Happy servants. That’s all I wanted. Happy servants who had waited so long to have a little girl to wait on hand and foot. And then you grow up, and if you have a cleaning lady twice a week, you pre-clean so she won’t judge you. “Annie” lied. The other salient point about “I Think I’m Gonna Like it Here” is the continuing triumph of stairs-based choreography. 90% of the dancing in “Annie” involves going up and down stairs.

Nell Carter,
Annie

The Broadway revival of Annie opened last night to mixed-to-positive reviews. I hope I get to see it. I have a soft spot for the show and countless memories wrapped up in the film, the soundtrack, and the show.

The previous Broadway revival of Annie, in 1997, was not so successful. It starred Nell Carter as Miss Hannigan, and despite my deep and abiding love for her, reports were that she terrorized the cast offstage as much as her character terrorized the girls onstage. Her Hannigan was also a lot angrier than the character is usually played, which made her harder to like. Strouse and Charnin wrote a new song for her, “You Make Me Happy,” but the planned cast recording fell through, so the song never caught on. The ever-resourceful Jo tracked down this recording for me, so now we can all hear it.

“Overture” from ANNIE

I absolutely love the shit out of every second of this.

So apparently this has been CUT from the revival?!?!?

Perhaps there are more important things in the world to be concerned about.

I’M MAD AS HELL AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!

Donald and I have been jointly seething about this since last night.

Ugh, this is still bothering me.

Great overtures pre-1964 were pretty common. But I’d say the one-two punch of Cabaret and Fiddler on the Roof ensured that overtures’ time was limited. (We’d like to thank you, Harold Prince, for really showing us the way.) I mean, what are the really great overtures beyond that era? I can think of three: Promises, Promises; Annie; and Merrily We Roll Along. (Sure, some other shows had overtures—Mack & Mabel comes to mind—but these three are worthy of induction into the hall of fame alongside Candide, Gypsy, Funny Girl, and Forum.)

What are your favorite post-1964 overtures?

For Jo.

I didn’t intend to liveblog this entire album, but then we get to the Ska version of “Hooverville” and how can I not?

OMG OMG OMG THERE’S AN EVEN WORSE ISRAELI VERSION OF ANNIE FROM 2012… AND THERE’S A MEGAMIX!!!

And it appears to interpolate other songs, including “There’s No Business Like Showbusiness” and something that I don’t recognize but whose lyrics translate to something like “they work without a break.”
