It’s SMASH vs. Justin Bieber this morning, and SMASH is winning.

Except that Bieber also has songs at #28 and #75 (even as “Broadway, Here I Come” has climbed to #83). Smash is only winning if you purposely ignore facts.

And do we want to talk about how many Glee songs currently outrank Smash?

Watching Oliver! today, I was struck by how much Oliver’s first encounter with Artful Dodger plays like a gay cruising scene. (I mean, just look at Oliver’s stance!)

Now I am mentally scripting a spec script for Glee involving Kurt cruising someone in the village who then sings “Consider Yourself” as he introduces Kurt to the piano bar scene in a delightfully choreographed romp through Marie’s Crisis, the Duplex, etc.

Come on guys, even Xanadu pulled off a makeover montage. XANADU.

I stopped watching Glee about two-thirds of the way through this season, but I continued DVRing the show. Over the last couple of days I just burned through the rest of the episodes. Most of my complaints about the show remain, but as always, there are flashes of brilliance that feel like rewards for shrugging off the inconsistent characterizations, dropped plot lines, etc.

Whoever had the idea for Chris Colfer’s Kurt to perform Peter Allen’s “Not The Boy Next Door” deserves the grand prize for Glee season 3. This was the perfect melding of song, character, context, and performance. So good, I’ve almost forgotten the abominable “Rain in Spain” punked up for Puck and the boys. (shudder)

I missed most of the second half of the season. And whatever my complaints, and I’m sure they will be legion, Kurt explaining Lesbian Bed Death to Rachel is a key moment in television history.

Someone should do a YouTube edit of just the gay bits of Glee, since they seem to be the only parts that are consistently well-written. That would be so much more entertaining than watching the entire show.

(I should note that I am writing this while watching the Valentine’s Day episode. Haven’t seen this week’s yet, which I understand might change my feelings on this.)

Someone should take the key and keep it till September. But seriously, let’s hope an improvement shows.

That gathering looks awfully white and overwhelmingly male.
