Does anyone know if there are any actors who have played the role of Patrick Dennis in both Mame and Little Me?

watkin replied to your post: Mame

Sorry to contradict you, but the line “somewhere between 40 and death” is from “Around the World with Auntie Mame” by Patrick Dennis, where it’s referred to an old British lady. Try again :P

Read what I wrote carefully. Lawrence & Lee cribbed the line from Dennis. But Jerry Herman cribbed it from Lawrence & Lee.

Continuing the series that also includes the Stephen Sondheim and Jule Styne playlists. Covering his career, more or less chronologically.

There are a couple of places where I wasn’t sure whether a song belong when it was written or when it first premiered, such as “Love is Only Love,” written for Mame but not used until the film version of Hello, Dolly! Feel free to make an argument if you think I should re-order these songs or include different songs or different renditions (assuming they are available on Spotify).

“It’s Today” — in Mexico! Rather, “¡Hoy Es Hoy!”

I was a little obsessed with Silvia Pinal’s recording of Gypsy, so you can imagine that I’m thrilled to discover she also played Mame.

Careful readers of this blog* might have picked up on my recent acquisition of a boyfriend, and his near immediate flight to the south. We’re going to have a go at this whole long-distance thing. And while I am not really looking forward to a long-distance relationship, I will admit that the idea of moving down south with him after an appropriate amount of long-distance courtship is appealing for several reasons, not the least of which is that it fulfills another element of my Mame complex.**

* Okay, any readers of this blog.

** I can’t be the only one who has a Mame complex, right? I have a persistent desire to whisk away younger relatives on adventures in high culture. The most thrilling part of drinking is knowing I can wake up the next morning and pronounce “your Auntie Mame is hung.” I cultivate long-term frenemies just so I can fully understand “Bosom Buddies.” Okay, maybe not the last one, but you get the picture.

P.S. My beau has never seen Mame. Or Auntie Mame.

You  might know “Love is Only Love” thanks to Barbra Streisand’s rendition in the film version of Hello, Dolly! But the song was written for and then cut from Mame. Thanks to some benevolent person on YouTube, you can hear Angela Lansbury & Jane Connell’s rendition of the song from a rehearsal for the original production.
