Dorothy Loudon,
Annie 2: Miss Hannigan's Revenge

Cleaning up iTunes tonight, I found this track. It’s Dorothy Loudon, right? (I mean, that voice is pretty unmistakable.) Does anyone have the rest of this recording? If you’ll pardon the expression, it’s an orphan in my collection.

Nell Carter,
Annie

The Broadway revival of Annie opened last night to mixed-to-positive reviews. I hope I get to see it. I have a soft spot for the show and countless memories wrapped up in the film, the soundtrack, and the show.

The previous Broadway revival of Annie, in 1997, was not so successful. It starred Nell Carter as Miss Hannigan, and despite my deep and abiding love for her, reports were that she terrorized the cast offstage as much as her character terrorized the girls onstage. Her Hannigan was also a lot angrier than the character is usually played, which made her harder to like. Strouse and Charnin wrote a new song for her, “You Make Me Happy,” but the planned cast recording fell through, so the song never caught on. The ever-resourceful Jo tracked down this recording for me, so now we can all hear it.

For Jo.

I didn’t intend to liveblog this entire album, but then we get to the Ska version of “Hooverville” and how can I not?

OMG OMG OMG THERE’S AN EVEN WORSE ISRAELI VERSION OF ANNIE FROM 2012… AND THERE’S A MEGAMIX!!!

And it appears to interpolate other songs, including “There’s No Business Like Showbusiness” and something that I don’t recognize but whose lyrics translate to something like “they work without a break.”

I’ll give you this, Israel. As a nation, you have an impeccable ability to render any song even worse thanks to totally inappropriate orchestrations.

James got a dog today — a golden retriever/dachshund mix named Magnum — and I can’t wait to meet him when I’m in Raleigh at the end of the month!

Sometimes pop acts cover showtunes and you end up with this.
