Ruggles Of Red Gap

You’ve probably heard the story of how Jule Styne tricked Sondheim into using a previously-used melody for “You’ll Never Get Away From Me” when they were writing Gypsy. The melody had already been heard by viewers of the 1957 television musical Ruggles of Red Gap, where it was known as “I’m In Pursuit of Happiness” (lyrics by Leo Robin), performed by Michael Redgrave, Jane Powell, and Peter Lawford.
