Nell Carter & Company,
Ain't Misbehavin'

Today’s stuck-in-my-head song.

I can’t believe that Nell Carter singing “Friend Like Me” hasn’t already been shared here. Seeing this unfold on the Academy Awards was one of my biggest WTF moments of my teenage years.

It wouldn’t be Chanukah without Nell Carter singing “Rock of Ages.”

Thanks to Keith for bringing this into my life a dozen years ago.

Nell Carter,
Annie

The Broadway revival of Annie opened last night to mixed-to-positive reviews. I hope I get to see it. I have a soft spot for the show and countless memories wrapped up in the film, the soundtrack, and the show.

The previous Broadway revival of Annie, in 1997, was not so successful. It starred Nell Carter as Miss Hannigan, and despite my deep and abiding love for her, reports were that she terrorized the cast offstage as much as her character terrorized the girls onstage. Her Hannigan was also a lot angrier than the character is usually played, which made her harder to like. Strouse and Charnin wrote a new song for her, “You Make Me Happy,” but the planned cast recording fell through, so the song never caught on. The ever-resourceful Jo tracked down this recording for me, so now we can all hear it.

I tried to reblog this from Thomas but it didn’t work. How did I make it to 34 years of age and not know that Dreamgirls was written for Nell Carter?
