In addition to their Sondheim…in Jazz series, The Trotter Trio also recorded albums of music from Star Wars and The Fantasticks, as well as a Michel Legrand tribute album.
This track is a jazz take on the “Ewok Celebration” from the end of Return of the Jedi. Many/most Tumblr users are young enough that they probably have never seen the original version of Jedi that includes this song (also known as “Yub Nub”), and I weep for their loss. (Remedy that now!)
(And if you like this, you should also check out Crackerjack Junction’s barbershop quartet take on the song.)
No Strings is an underappreciated score. And No Strings: An After Theatre Version is a fabulous supper-club rendition of the score. Here’s my favorite song from that album, La Vern Baker’s shouty, growly “Loads of Love.”
When I was in college, I was privileged to take a class on Gender and Performance with Holly Hughes (she of the NEA Four). We bonded over our mutual love for this score, so now whenever I hear one of these songs, my mind immediately jumps to Clit Notes.
While obsessing over Oh Captain! last night, I went into a mini frenzy of looking for material from and about it online (as one does) and discovered that the songwriters Livingston & Evans have the most incredible website, with a huge archive of full mp3s of their music - demos, cast recordings, singles, covers…. all there, all free. It’s not complete, but there’s much to enjoy.
This track is a jazz cover of my favorite song from the show, Femininity, by Leonard Feather / Dick Hyman All Stars, with vocals by Marilyn Moore.
