Mandy Patinkin’s second album, Dress Casual, features a pretty fantastic Hollywood medley, in which Mandy interprets a half-dozen classics from the RKO era as only Mandy can.
Part two of Liza Minnelli’s “Men’s Medley” from her 1992 Radio City Music Hall concert. (Part one here.)
Liza’s 1992 Radio City Music Hall Concert featured an epic medley of songs about men. It was also one of Liza’s last recorded performances before her voice really went to hell. Part one of two.
Julie and Carol’s 60s medley, part two, from Julie and Carol at Lincoln Center. (Here’s part one.)
But seriously - these two broads singing “Aquarius” and “Son of a Preacher Man” and the rest is just brilliant.
Julie & Carol’s follow-up medley for their Lincoln Center special covered the evolution of pop music in the ten years since the previous concert. If you’ve been dying to hear these two grande dames of the musical theater cover the Beatles and Burt Bacharach, you’re in luck.
This medley is so long it’s in two parts on YouTube. Part two coming in a minute.
Here’s the legendary Merman/Martin medley, from the Ford 50th Anniversary show. I know that the word legendary is overused, but growing up for me, that’s exactly what this was — in those days when it wasn’t readily available on CD, DVD, and YouTube, my dad would tell me stories of seeing this on live television when he was young. Forbidden Broadway had a running bit based on this appearance of the two legends: for many years, every edition of Forbidden Broadway had a “Merman and Martin” sketch that would evolve with time.
It’s interesting that it starts with each of them singing essentially a full version of one of their signature songs before becoming a full-on medley.
It occurs to me that one big advantage of the Tumblr/Spotify link-up is the ability to share extra-long tracks that would otherwise exceed the upload limit.
This realization nicely coincides with my momentary fascination with medleys. Blame Julie and Carol, who included legendarily epic medleys in each of their concerts together. (Those albums aren’t yet on Spotify — stay tuned.) Those two medleys got me thinking of other fantastically epic medleys, such as the famed teaming of Merman and Martin. I’ll post that as soon as I find it.
Meanwhile, enjoy this similarly epic medley from the Callaway sisters. And let’s see what else I can dig up.
