Al Pacino is the Nic Cage of the theatre.
Love Life | Mr. Right
Dorothy Loudon on American Songbook Series: Kurt Weill
Music: Kurt Weill
Lyrics & Book: Alan Jay Lerner
Aladdin | Come to the Supermarket
Gregory Jbara on Prime Time Musicals
Music & Lyrics: Cole Porter
Book: S.J. Perelman
Note: Never on Broadway but a year after its television production, there was a London stage production in 1959 at the Coliseum Theatre.
My appreciation of Porter’s Aladdin score has grown over the years, but I’ve always loved this song, and this rendition is my absolute favorite.
After the Ball | Faraway Land
Graham Payn, with Patricia Cree, on the original London cast recording
Music, Lyrics, and Book: Noël Coward
Because this is Coward’s attempt at writing a wistful song about Australia, I hold a secret hope that someday Hugh Jackman will add it to his repertoire.
Infinite Joy | Mister, Make Me a Song
William Finn on the live off-Broadway cast recording
Music and Lyrics: William Finn
You’ve probably noticed I’ve been in a William Finn mood of late.
Jennie | Waitin’ for the Evening Train
Mary Martin and George Wallace on the original Broadway cast recording
Music: Arthur Schwartz
Lyrics: Howard Dietz
Book: Arnold Schulman
There were certain prejudices I was brought up with as my parents’ child. One of those was that the score of Jennie wasn’t any good, and it certainly wasn’t worthy of Mary Martin. I believe that was a misinformed opinion, and this track is one piece of excellent evidence in my favor.
The Band Wagon | New Sun in the Sky
Mary Martin and chorus on the 1951 LP
Music: Arthur Schwartz
Lyrics: Howard Dietz
Book: George S. Kaufman and Howard Dietz
One of my favorite pick-me-up songs.
New Faces of 1968 | Philosophy
the original Broadway cast recording
Music & Lyrics: June Carroll and Gene Bissell
Incidentally, the music to this song is by Carl Friberg with lyrics by Hal Hackady. The singer is Rod Perry. And I am starting to see the value of Playbill Vault. :)
Pins and Needles | Mene, Mene, Tekel
the 25th Anniversary Edition cast recording
Music & Lyrics: Harold Rome
Book: Arthur Arent, Marc Blitzstein, Emmanuel Eisenberg, Charles Friedman, David Gregory, Joseph Schrank, Arnold B. Horwitt, John Latouche, and Harold Rome
Combining two of my favorite things, Harold Rome and showtunes based on Bible stories!
